Bathurst Connections: The Great Miramichi Fire 1825
The 200th anniversary of the Great Miramichi Fire of 1825 and its fascinating connections to Bathurst will be marked this summer at the Maison Doucet Hennessy House through FREE heritage theatre, music and story telling.
Starting Thursday, July 24, Character Matters Miramichi will present the first of four FREE weekly bilingual performances which tell the stories of Miramichi shipbuilder, Joseph Cunard and the enterprising Acadian refugee Charles Doucet, two prominent businessmen from very different backgrounds whose lives were impacted by the Miramichi Fire. With his source of wood for building ships decimated, Cunard cast his sights north to Bathurst ,while Doucet, a leading Catholic and member of both the Poor House Committee and Immigrant Society, had to deal with the refugee crisis which the fire brought to Bathurst the winter of 1825-1826.
On Saturday July 26 (English) and Sunday July 27 (French), well known local history researchers, Mary Anne Riordon-Barry and Patsy Hennessy, will explore the amazing true stories of the people and families who survived the Miramichi Fire. Many fled to Bathurst and the Chaleur region for safety that winter. Some returned to the Miramichi while others settled in the area and their descendants live in Bathurst today.
On August 9 (English) and August 16 (French), Rod O’Connell will speak to the environmental impact of the Miramichi Fire. A professional forester with a special interest in local shipbuilding history, O’Connell will explain how the dramatic loss of so much of Miramichi’s timber led to the establishment of Joseph Cunard’s shipbuilding enterprise in Bathurst, building upon an already existing industry in the Bathurst area.
Classical musician David Scott is Artist-in-Residence this summer at the Maison Doucet Hennessy House. David will wrap up his residency with three bilingual concerts on August 22, 23 and 24, showcasing original compositions inspired by the history of the Great Miramichi Fire.
Also on Sunday August 24, Dr. Alan MacEachern, author of The Miramichi Fire: A history, will give a presentation in English examining the environmental, economic, social and cultural impact of the Miramichi Fire on New Brunswick.
Throughout the summer, an exhibit of rarely seen wood carvings by the late Bathurst artist Wilfred Doucet will be on display at the Maison Doucet Hennessy House. Mr. Doucet’s art draws upon traditional New Brunswick and Acadian themes including farming, logging and fishing which speak to days long gone by.
Summer programming at the Maison Doucet Hennessy House is made possible with financial assistance from the Province of New Brunswick, the Government of Canada and the City of Bathurst as well as support from the Bathurst Heritage Museum, the Irish Canadian Cultural Association-North East Chapter, and the NB Content Creators Collective.

Connexions Bathurst: Le grand incendie de Miramichi en 1825
Le 200e anniversaire du grand incendie de Miramichi en 1825 et ses liens fascinants avec Bathurst seront célébrés cet été à la Maison Doucet Hennessy grâce à des spectacles, de la musique et des contes patrimoniaux GRATUITS.
À partir du jeudi 24 juillet, Character Matters Miramichi présentera la première des quatre représentations hebdomadaires bilingues GRATUITES qui racontent l’histoire du constructeur naval de Miramichi, Joseph Cunard, et du réfugié acadien entreprenant Charles Doucet, deux hommes d’affaires éminents issus de milieux très différents dont la vie a été bouleversée par l’incendie de Miramichi. Sa source de bois pour la construction navale ayant été décimée, Cunard a tourné son regard vers le nord, vers Bathurst, tandis que Doucet, catholique influent et membre du Poor House Committee et de l’Immigrant Society, a dû faire face à la crise des réfugiés que l’incendie a provoquée à Bathurst pendant l’hiver 1825-1826.
Le samedi 26 juillet (en anglais) et le dimanche 27 juillet (en français), Mary Anne Riordon-Barry et Patsy Hennessy, deux chercheuses locales renommées spécialisées dans l’histoire, exploreront les incroyables histoires vraies des personnes et des familles qui ont survécu à l’incendie de Miramichi. Beaucoup ont fui vers Bathurst et la région de Chaleur pour se mettre en sécurité cet hiver-là. Certains sont retournés à Miramichi, tandis que d’autres se sont installés dans la région et leurs descendants vivent aujourd’hui à Bathurst.
Les 9 août (en anglais) et 16 août (en français), Rod O’Connell parlera de l’impact environnemental de l’incendie de Miramichi. Forester professionnel passionné par l’histoire locale de la construction navale, M. O’Connell expliquera comment la perte dramatique d’une grande partie du bois de Miramichi a conduit à la création de l’entreprise de construction navale de Joseph Cunard à Bathurst, s’appuyant sur une industrie déjà existante dans la région de Bathurst.
Le musicien classique David Scott est artiste en résidence cet été à la Maison Doucet Hennessy. David clôturera sa résidence par trois concerts bilingues les 22, 23 et 24 août, au cours desquels il présentera des compositions originales inspirées de l’histoire du grand incendie de Miramichi.
Le dimanche 24 août, le Dr Alan MacEachern, auteur de The Miramichi Fire: A history, donnera une présentation en anglais sur l’impact environnemental, économique, social et culturel de l’incendie de Miramichi sur le Nouveau-Brunswick.
Tout au long de l’été, une exposition de sculptures sur bois rarement vues de l’artiste Wilfred Doucet, originaire de Bathurst, sera présentée à la Maison Doucet Hennessy. L’art de M. Doucet s’inspire de thèmes traditionnels du Nouveau-Brunswick et de l’Acadie, notamment l’agriculture, l’exploitation forestière et la pêche, qui évoquent une époque révolue.
La programmation estivale de la Maison Doucet Hennessy est rendue possible grâce à l’aide financière de la province du Nouveau-Brunswick, du gouvernement du Canada et de la ville de Bathurst, ainsi qu’au soutien du Musée du patrimoine de Bathurst, de l’Association culturelle irlandaise du Canada – section nord-est, et du Collectif des créateurs de contenu du Nouveau-Brunswick.
